236 years later and the United States is still best laboratory for the potential of liberty

American Muslim organization celebrates 4th of July with focus on Muslim Liberty Project

PHOENIX (July 4, 2012) – M. Zuhdi Jasser president and founder of The American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD) and author of A Battle for the Soul of Islam: An American Muslim Patriot’s Fight for His Faith released the following statement to commemorate the Fourth of July:

“As we come together to celebrate the Fourth of July this week, it is only appropriate to take a moment to reflect on the importance of this day. When those 55 men signed their name on the Declaration of Independence they not only declared their independence from the British crown, but demonstrated for all humanity that our Creator intended us to be free. In so doing they reclaimed faith from the crown and vested it in the hands of the people.

These brave actions culminated in the grand experiment that is America. While there are certainly conflicts that divide us, there is no place where I as an American Muslim can live, practice my faith and pursue happiness that is as free and as just as the United States.

As we celebrate our Independence, the American Islamic Forum for Democracy takes as a solemn duty our call to demonstrate to the youth and in particular the Muslim youth of America the importance of maintaining vigilance over the rights that are ordained from our creator, but guaranteed by our Constitution.  Our Muslim Liberty Project aims to teach our children that government based in reason that embraces the right of every individual to accept or reject faith as they see fit is not in conflict with their Islamic faith and in reality provides the safest environment for Muslims to exist.

With the changes in the Middle East and the rise of Islamists to power in the region that duty becomes even more important. The threat posed by the radicalization of our youth in American Muslim communities is as palpable today as it has ever been.  As we have seen in Norway in just the past week, Al Qaeda in Yemen is not sitting idly by waiting to find ways to attack us.  They are engaged and working every day to get beyond our defenses.

If we inoculate our American Muslim youth against the ideology of Islamism and its inherent pathway towards radicalization, we keep the wolves at bay and leave room for these youth to embrace the values of Americanism that were put into action with the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Take time on this holiday to thank the founding fathers for their courage and their conviction. May God Bless the United States of America and may God keep and protect those in the U.S. military that fight to maintain that freedom for us.”

Syria loads chemical weapons into bombs; military awaits Assad’s order

Pentagon sources tell NBC News that the Syrian military is awaiting final orders to launch chemical weapons against its own people after precursor chemicals for deadly sarin gas were loaded into aerial bombs. NBC’s Jim Miklaszewski reports.

Updated at 8:20 a.m. ET: The Syrian military is prepared to use chemical weapons against its own people and is awaiting final orders from President Bashar Assad, U.S. officials told NBC News on Wednesday.

The military has loaded the precursor chemicals for sarin, a deadly nerve gas, into aerial bombs that could be dropped onto the Syrian people from dozens of fighter-bombers, the officials said.

As recently as Tuesday, officials had said there was as yet no evidence that the process of mixing the “precursor” chemicals had begun. But Wednesday, they said their worst fears had been confirmed: The nerve agents were locked and loaded inside the bombs.

Sarin is an extraordinarily lethal agent. Iraqi President Saddam Hussein’s forces killed 5,000 Kurds with a single sarin attack on Halabja in 1988.

U.S. officials stressed that as of now, the sarin bombs hadn’t been loaded onto planes and that Assad hadn’t issued a final order to use them. But if he does, one of the officials said, “there’s little the outside world can do to stop it.”

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton reiterated U.S. warnings to Assad not to use chemical weapons, saying he would be crossing “a red line” if he did so.

So far, intelligence sources say, bombs loaded with the components of sarin haven’t yet been loaded onto planes. NBC’s Jim Miklaszewski reports.

Speaking Wednesday at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Clinton said the Syrian government was on the brink of collapse, raising the prospect that “an increasingly desperate Assad regime” might turn to chemical weapons or that the banned weapons could fall into other hands.

“Ultimately, what we should be thinking about is a political transition in Syria and one that should start as soon as possible,” Clinton said. “We believe their fall is inevitable. It is just a question of how many people have to die before that occurs.”

Aides told NBC News that Clinton was expected next week to officially recognize the main opposition movement, the National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, with which she is scheduled to meet in Morocco. Britain, France, Turkey and some key Arab leaders have already recognized the opposition.

Fighting intensified Wednesday in the 21-month civil war, which has left 40,000 people dead. The U.N. withdrew its personnel from Damascus, saying conditions were too dangerous.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, speaking Wednesday at NATO headquarters in Brussels, said the fall of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government was “inevitable.”

The government said this week that it wouldn’t use chemical weapons on its own people after President Barack Obama warned that doing so would be “totally unacceptable.”

But U.S. officials said this week that the government had ordered its Chemical Weapons Corps to “be prepared,” which Washington interpreted as a directive to begin bringing together the components needed to weaponize Syria’s chemical stockpiles.

U.S. officials had long believed that the Syrian government was stockpiling the banned chemical weapons before it acknowledged possessing them this summer.

NBC News reported in July that U.S. intelligence agencies believed that in addition to sarin, Syria had access to tabun, a chemical nerve agent, as well as traditional chemical weapons like mustard gas and hydrogen cyanide.

Officials told NBC News at the time that the Syrian government was moving the outlawed weapons around the country, leaving foreign intelligence agencies unsure where they might end up.

Syria is one of only seven nations that hasn’t ratified the 1992 Chemical Weapons Convention, the arms control agreement that outlaws the production, stockpiling and use of such weapons.

Bombshells filled with chemicals can be carried by Syrian Air Force fighter-bombers, in particular Sukhoi-22/20, MiG-23 and Sukhoi-24 aircraft. In addition, some reports indicate that unguided short-range Frog-7 artillery rockets may be capable of carrying chemical payloads.

In terms of longer-range delivery systems, Syria has a few dozen SS-21 ballistic missiles with a maximum range of 72 miles; 200 Scud-Bs, with a maximum range of 180 miles; and 60 to 120 Scud-Cs, with a maximum range of 300 miles, all of which are mobile and are capable of carrying chemical weapons, according U.S. intelligence officials.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton echoed President Obama’s recent vow to take action if Syrian President Bashar Assad uses chemical weapons during the ongoing clashes within his country. U.S. officials are also concerned about the rising influence of extremist groups within Syria. NBC’s Andrea Mitchell reports.

In the wake of violent anti-American protests across the globe, our next debate “Better Elected Islamists Than Dictators” is of particular significance to America’s foreign relations. The popular uprisings of the Arab Spring have left a leadership void that Islamists parties have been quick to fill. The U.S. now must face the rise of groups that are less amenable to the West than their autocratic predecessors. Will elected Islamists mean more radicalization and increased anti-Americanism, or will the spread of democratic values liberalize the Arab world? You won’t want to miss this timely debate on Thursday, October 4, at Kaufman Center. President Barack Obama and GOP nominee Mitt Romney pulled their attack ads and did not make any campaign stops in honor of the eleventh anniversary of 9/11.

While the two presidential candidates withheld politics from the matter, some believe that U.S. leaders should use the date to engage Americans in a national discussion surrounding the terrorist attacks.

Host Jessica Jordan spoke with Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, founder of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, about the root causes of the attacks and various ideologies involved, including American liberty and political Islam.

Dr. Zuhdi Jasser said prominent American leaders should use their positions to address the root causes of the attacks and discuss various ideologies involved, including American liberty and political Islam.

Brahimi’s peace plan latest failure in Syria

Meanwhile violence spreads across the borders to Lebanon and Jordan while U.S. sits on sidelines

PHOENIX (October 23, 2012) – Dr. M. Zuhdi Jasser, a devout Muslim and the co-founder of the Save Syria Now! issued the following statement regarding the latest developments in Syria:

“Comments from the Free Syria Army highlight how ludicrously terminal yet another failed attempt is at a UN peace plan for Syria.  U.N.-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi had proposed a ceasefire to be implemented on Eid al-Adha holiday, Islam’s ‘holiest day’.

Comments from Colonel Qassem Saadeddine, spokesman for the joint command of the Free Syria Army highlight the fact that the proposal lacked any “mechanism to implement it”. Saadeddine commented to Reuters “Who is going to implement it and who is going to supervise it?

It is offensive to Muslims and especially all Syrians to throw out one more date for a ceasefire that only prolongs the agony and empowers Assad’s thugs to continue their slaughter. The deaths in Syria have climbed well past 30,000 with now reports of over 2 million homes destroyed and yet there is still no real leadership on how to stop the bloodshed and remove Assad from power.  The Presidential race has essentially ground any efforts by the Obama Administration at helping bring an end to the Assad regime to a complete halt.  The Syrian people can no longer trust any role which this administration would have in helping them bring their own misery to an end.

Violence is spreading across the region with attacks from the Assad regime on opponents in Beirut, Lebanon and terrorist plots from al-Qaeda elements in Jordan that were armed by militants crossing the border into Syria.

Western embassies were potential targets in the Jordanian plot.  American lives were once again in the crosshairs because the Obama administration has failed to develop any strategy, let alone a winning strategy, for the changes taking place in the Middle East and specifically Syria.

Syria has the potential to be the linchpin for change in the region.  A truly free Syria diminishes the reach of Iran, provides a buffer for Israel and removes an ally for Hezbollah and Hamas.

A free Syria is a game changer. But it requires leadership and courage in the face of the enemies of freedom. The Obama Administration has not shown that it has the resolve or the ideological capacity to meet that challenge.”
