Press Release: Sentencing is a stark reminder of the global Islamist threat.

Sentencing of Indonesian Christian Governor of Jakarta on blasphemy charge is a reminder of the rising global Islamist threat.

The American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD) condemned the sentencing of an Indonesian Christian politician, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, for “blasphemy.” The sentencing of Mr. Basuki, the Jakarta governor, also known as “Ahok” was heavier than what prosecutors asked for – rather than the two years probation they requested, he was sentenced to two years in prison.

M. Zuhdi Jasser, M.D., founder and president of AIFD, released the following statement:

“The fact that Mr. Basuki was even brought up on charges of ‘blasphemy’ – a truly invented ‘crime’ – is horrifying. The reality of his sentencing should alarm all people, not just Christians, and not just Indonesians.

Indonesia has long enjoyed the reputation of being a model of Muslim moderation and pluralism, yet its problem of Islamism is real: from soaring rates of female genital mutilation (FGM) to violent protests against authors and artists for ‘blasphemy,’ the country is undergoing an ugly and dangerous radicalization that will hurt, kill, and traumatize its citizens and leak across its borders, threatening global security. Mr. Basuki was a governor whose election had only improved Indonesia’s global reputation. His sentencing proves that those who are loyal to Islamist forces no longer care about upholding this image for Indonesia, instead they seek a more sinister role in the world.

Ahok’s case again proves that the nation is on the front lines of this global existential battle against Islamism.

We urge Indonesian citizens to challenge their religious establishments – particularly the Nahdlatul Ulama – to take swift and bold action to condemn and dis-empower those who support and promote punishments for blasphemy, and to demand that their government do the same. I visited Indonesia during my time on the U.S. Commission for International Religious Freedom, and know that this evil does not represent them. Their government must do better to protect and represent the will of its people.”

Nidal Hasan Sentenced to Death

Today, a military jury recommended that Nidal Malik Hasan, who murdered 13 American soldiers and wounded 32 others at Fort Hood on November 5, 2009, be sentenced to death.

We at AIFD have been following this case closely – and commenting on it regularly.

In his 2012 book, A Battle for the Soul of Islam, Dr. Jasser – an American Muslim veteran of the United States Navy – volunteers to be first in line to administer justice to Hasan upon his receipt of the death penalty. He believes it would be no greater symbol of how wrong Hasan was in his theology than to find himself dead at the hand of loyal, patriotic American Muslims enacting the will of the American military court.

An excerpt from A Battle for the Soul of Islam:

“My hope is that once we extract any information we need from Hasan about his radicalization and contacts, and once he is found guilty, he receive the death penalty.  If I may set aside my Hippocratic oath for just a few seconds, let me be the first to sign up to be one of those who carry out the ultimate punishment for this man.  While I know that is not how we carry out capital punishment in the United States, this is part of how I feel in the aftermath of this massacre.  There would be no greater symbol of how wrong Dr. Hasan was in his ‘theology,’ that he could not go to war against Muslims, than for him to find himself dead at the hands of loyal, patriotic American Muslims enacting the will of the American military court.”  – Chapter 7, pg. 159

We pray that today’s decision will begin to bring some closure to the families of those who were mercilessly slaughtered and injured on that horrible day in 2009.

 

AIFD Fellow: Arif Humayun

Arif Humayun

Arif Humayun is an American citizen, practicing Muslim, and avid writer. A specialist in comparative religion, Arif is dedicated to understanding what causes radicalization and in advancing human rights.

Born in Pakistan, Arif came to the United States in 1980 to pursue post graduate studies in engineering at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania.  He lived in Australia from 1989-1992, where he developed his interest in comparative religion.

Arif authored a detailed white paper on radicalism among Muslims after the 2009 terrorist attacks in Mumbai, and has written extensively on topics like Shari’a, jihad, blaspemy, and apostasy.

Arif’s most recent work,  Connivance by Silence,  addresses the politically-inspired interpretations of Islam that have crept into the Muslim discourse and inspired radicalization. In Connivance by Silence, Arif explores this topic specifically in the context of Western democracies.

Professionally, Arif manages a global intellectual property licensing business as an employee of a large multinational corporation.  His frequent and extensive global travel has brought him a crystal-clear perspective on the destructive phenomenon of political Islam. Arif is also the president and co-founder of Circle of Peace, an international initiative to strengthen the bonds of humanity and compassion across faith communities. He is also an active member of the American Islamic Leadership Coalition.
