February 6, 2019 “Freedom – a generation away from extinction”.

“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it on to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.”

These words spoken by Ronald Reagan have never been truer than they are today. We must always keep in mind that the United States is a very young country compared to many other nations in the world, and that while our democracy has endured many struggles, and has always prevailed, it is not indestructible. Anything that is taken for granted is in danger of being swept away.

For that reason, we must be ever vigilant when it comes to protecting the democratic ideals that the Founding Fathers gave us. We must fight for liberty and freedom with a greater intensity than those who seek to destroy it.

At AIFD we fight day in and day out for liberty and freedom from Islamism. We seek to reform and ultimately defeat the ideas of Islamism. We see the global and domestic scourge of Islamism and its attendant OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation) nations as the single greatest threat to the West.

It’s not too hard to look around today here at home and see the ascendancy of radical Islamists and the weakening of our foundations of liberty. Many Muslims believe in President Reagan’s vision for America’s role in the world and in our own identity at home.

Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, President of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy lauded Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for his speech in Cairo. Dr. Jasser, noted,

“As a reform-minded Muslim dedicated to advancing the ideas of liberty, it was beyond refreshing to hear our Secretary of State publicly and unwaveringly reset the misguided policies of the Obama era doctrine. The repudiation of Islamist terrorism whether from Sunni extremism of ISIS or Shi’a extremism of Iran’s Khomeinists is now a marker that has begun to clarify what a Trump Doctrine will look like for American policy in the Middle East and across the Muslim majority world. It is long overdue for the United States to lead through strength and already in less than a year since the reinstitution of sanctions and the decimation of ISIS, we have seen a rebalancing of the fragile conflicts across the region.”

Dr. Jasser concluded,

“We hope that this strategy will continue to progress toward the next natural steps where the United States begins to advance from simply a defense against those that hate freedom to an offense in the advancement of the ideas of liberty and counter-Islamism.”

Dear friends and supporters of AIFD,

I hope this note finds you in good health and joy, amidst hope for a peaceful new year.

Here I’ve shared with you a short video of my thoughts on our efforts and why, along with your support, our work is even more critical today as we continue our fight against Islamism.

2018 was quite an enlightening year for AIFD. So much progress was made in the many areas we follow or we lead, not least of which was the thankful decrease in Islamist terror attacks. But we realized more than ever the complacency our nation and the free world has when it comes to defeating Islamism.

With the wane of specific acts of terror, the understanding of the threat also waned. This revealed to us the significant amount of work ahead of us to defeat the threat of Islamism. While it is comforting news on one front that Islamist terror in the US has diminished, we fear that Americans will falsely interpret this as a decrease in jihadism and its Islamist inspiration.

Contrarily, the non-violent Islamist movement is rather flourishing in America as Islamists continue to exploit our unprecedented freedoms, denigrate our American values, and work to empower our Islamist enemies across the globe from Turkey, Syria, Qatar, Iran, and Pakistan to name a few. In fact, part of the decrease in terrorism may be the consolidation of understanding among Islamist leadership that non-violent Islamism is far more effective against the West for their goals than violent Islamism (terrorism) ever could be. Terrorism woke up the sleeping West, which may be going back to sleep?

It is imperative that we remain vigilant in the fight against Islamism, even in the absence of Islamist terrorism, as terrorism is only one tactic employed by Islamists. Regardless of whether it is violent or non-violent, the end goal always has been (and always will be) a world of Islamic states that join into a global caliphate.

If we are going to prevail in this battle, we must fight for liberty with the same intensity and consistency that the Islamists fight to destroy it.

Having said that, we remain steadfast in our devotion to the defeat of Islamism.
